Admissions Open for MBBS 2019-2020 (Last Date: 16th May)

Update 02/06/2019: I'd like to add that while most of us generally know these facts by the end of A Level/FSc, it should be stated that please memorize scientific data and facts that are used in calculations and questions. This includes values like specific heat capacity of water, the first 30 elements of the Periodic Table, the values of sin cos and tan for 30 45 60 90 etc., the gravitational constant, etc. Take a day towards the end to go through these because no data booklet is provided for the calculations nor will you be allowed to have a calculator. The calculations will be simple enough to be done without a calculator but you obviously need to know those values.

-------------------------------------------------------

Greetings,

It's that time of the year again and so the process begins. First of all, here is the main MBBS admissions page:

Over here, please download the Programme Information Booklet and go through it in detail. You can also download the Sample Test paper that will give you an overview of the format. You're going to have to apply by the "apply online" link towards the bottom of the main page (also found towards the right as the top link, "Online Application"). And of course, generally just familiarize yourself with everything.

If you have any questions, contact AKU at mbbs.query@aku.edu. They always helped me with my issues/queries.

Last year with the blog posts containing extensive resources for the entry test and the interview + the guide I personally wrote elaborating upon my own experience through the process and my advice/tips for future applicants + the several questions that I answered in the comments underneath said blog posts - I believe that more than sufficient material has been compiled to guide you through the process. Thus, I'm simply going to link you to my guide and the blog posts of last year as that should cover about everything.

However! Upon inspection of the Sample Test on their website as well as after going through the Programme Information Booklet, it seems that the English section of the AKU entry test has been removed entirely. Thus, any and all discussions surrounding that part can be ignored as you go through these resources.

The other thing I want to mention is that I might make another post or two containing newer advice from the Class of 2023, in particular about the interview, given that they wish to share that. Moreover, it is also possible that seniors/my classmates have tips/resources/interview experiences to share as well, so I'll either keep adding stuff as updates to this post, or I'll make newer posts as I deem fit. Hence, do keep visiting this blog and this post regularly.

In addition to the above, go through the blog posts that were made back in 2015 and before that on this blog as well, for that also contains great advice that I personally followed.

And of course, feel free to comment below for any questions or email me at akuhelp@outlook.com, and I'll reply as soon as possible.

Best of luck! :)

  1. I've been waiting for this post since a long time. First of all thanks alot. This means alot. Now coming to the things i wanted to ask specially( they're not that many)
    1) in the guide you mentioned about aku board having their own books. I followed up on this and found out that they only have syllabus outlines, just like we have in olevels/alevels. If their are amy books published by the aku board, i'd be really thankful if you could provide any idea aboit where to get them from.
    2) i wanted to ask about IBO( international biology olympiad) participants. Can we consider ibo participation an extra curricular good enough to help in getting the merit scholarships? Every year top 4 students are selected, i was wondering how many of these end up in aku eventually? Do you know of any ibo participant having received merit scholarship at aku?
    3) how generous is aku's financial aid? What is the average % of aid given etc etc. Considering a middle class student for whom affording living at aku( hostel bills, mess, clothing etc etc) in itself is a huge burden.

    1. You're absolutely welcome, glad to be of help.

      1) It's mentioned in the guide that they have their own syllabus and the Sindh textbook board books are the ones that complEment it well. For example:

"If you choose to follow the AKU-EB syllabus outline, the best option for all of your biology needs are the Sindh Textbook Board, Jamshoro books (for both the first and the second-year syllabus), since they have the exact same chapters and subchapters in the same sequence as the syllabus outline."

      2) Funny you should ask that, I have a classmate who did participate in IBO and is also among those who are on scholarship, haha. So yeah it's definitely a solid extra-curricular.

      3) This is something that one can't be sure of as it's on a case by case basis. It's just that they put you through a lot of scrutiny as you have to fill in a lot of details to prove that you truly will have a difficult time meeting the costs. I have heard of some people having around half of the costs covered. But at this point it's always suggested that you focus on getting into AKU to the best of your abilities and that you think about these things once you've secured the admission.

Feel free to ask about anything else. :)

  2. I want to ask that if english portion is removed entirely from the test. Then how many question will be there in the test? Still 180 or less? Kindly respond.

    1. As per the Sample Test file it's 120 questions. Do understand that the English portion was a separate portion altogether.

  3. Please tell me that english is removed from the test so it makes the test more difficult isn't it? And passing criteria is still 67% this year or higher. Please respond!

    1. No it doesn't because you had to pass the English portion and science portions independently. So even if people passed English without passing science, they still didn't get accepted, and vice versa. So now all you have to pass is science.

    1. I emailed them once and they mentioned that 4000 people apply each year, out of which 200-300 pass the test, and then 100 get selected. But I personally feel many more apply. Not sure though.

There is a minimum to be eligible for the test and to apply and that's found in the Programme Information Booklet. As for the AKU test the average changes each year but usually lies around 65%, could be more, could be less.

For the issue of past papers see this post on this blog, "AKU Entry Test 2018 Advice" http://theakuchallenge.blogspot.com/2018/06/aku-entry-test-2018-advice.html

At the very start of this post in front of "Update 6/21/2018".

Go through the rest of that blog for math/science reasoning advice.
